NEW
HOME FOR RAINBOW CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
The
purchase of the Edward Street Day Care Center building at 10 Edward
Street was completed in October. "The entire Rainbow organization
is excited with and energized by the purchase of the Edward Street
property" confirmed Brian R. Forts, President, Board of Directors.
"The new location will provide the agency with the opportunity
to expand our programming and allow us to assist more children and
families in the greater Worcester area."
The Center has been located in Plumley Village since its incorporation
in 1972. While Rainbow serves families from throughout the Worcester
area, the majority of families live in the Belmont Hill neighborhood.
In our search for larger headquarters, it was recognized that we
needed to maintain our presence in the "Plumley" neighborhood.
The Edward Street building was the perfect solution.
It is exciting for Rainbow to bring new life to this historic facility.
The building opened in 1910 under the name of "Temporary Home
and Day Nursery," which provided a safe haven for women and
children who were in need of temporary lodging. The overnight services
were discontinued in the early 50's but the "day" nursery
services remained until its closing in 2001. The name of the organization
was changed to Edward Street Day Care Center in 1968. Given its
rich history, it is especially meaningful that the building will
remain as a childcare center that provides services to children
and families.
The size of the Edward Street building will allow Rainbow to expand
its classrooms and services to better meet the needs of current
and new children and families. However before the Center can move
to the building extensive renovations will be needed to meet current
building code requirements and to provide a healthy and safe environment
for staff and children. The Center has hired Cutler Associates as
the architectural and general contracting firm to oversee the renovations.
It is anticipated that a capital campaign will be launched in January
to assist in the financing of the project. We look forward to the
day when we move into our new home.
