Rainbow Child Development Center's Preschool

A Unique Place

Rainbow's Preschool is a subsidized child-care center caring for 51 children at any given time. On the surface we look like any other child-care center. We have an atmosphere that is nurturing, safe, loving, caring, calm and supportive of the children and their parents/guardians. The Preschool is a nationally accredited program with highly trained, well-educated staff. We add a comprehensive educational component and garnish it with an excellent support system through contracts and collaborations with other agencies.

These components could describe any number of centers, so what makes us unique? We have added another facet to our program. It is the Social Service component that addresses the emotional and social aspects of a child's development. We realize that children need to be emotionally healthy to have a happy, productive life. We accomplish this in two ways as described below:

* Classroom: At the Preschool, teachers weave a self-esteem curriculum into every facet of the program. All interactions are based on positive reinforcement, redirection, problem-solving, conflict-resolution and making choices. The environment is created to ensure that children will be successful, have pride in their accomplishments and develop positive relationships with the teachers and their peers. Children learn to identify their emotions and express their emotions verbally instead of physically. Teachers facilitate all these processes and use therapeutic techniques when necessary.

* Support Services: We have found that children are unable to learn when their thoughts and energy are consumed with worries, anxieties, fears and anger. This is why the social service component is such an important part of the Rainbow Preschool. When teachers work alongside with therapists, the children are supported. Their feelings are identified and validated. They learn appropriate methods ofexpressing their feelings, reduce aggressive responses, improve their social skills and develop a healthier self-awareness and self-concept. As this process unfolds they become able to channel their energy to explore and learn.

At the present time we offer the following:

a) Speech therapy three days a week. Children are seen individually and in small groups to enhance their speech and language development.
b) Individual play therapy to assist a child in dealing with personal issues.
c) Group therapy to support self-esteem and develop social skills.d) Parental support through individual meetings and referrals to collaborative agencies. Our aim is to support the children and their families in all aspects of their lives to ensure a successful future.
