From
the Executive Director
We
are pleased to share our Fall, 2001 newsletter with you. As you
read the articles you will note that many positive things are happening
at the Center. Our first "signature event," held in May
was a wonderful success. We are eagerly awaiting next year's event
to be held on April 26, 2002. We begin our third year of our capital
campaign to raise funds to make much needed renovations to our preschool.
We look forward to 2002 to celebrate the Center's 30th anniversary.
And we will begin a new phase of strategic planning as we are now
in the final year of our three year plan. The Center just completed
its "Pacesetter" United Way Campaign with 93% of employees
participating with a 10.56% increase in contributions over the previous
year. Our employees care.
We are proud of our achievements. We are proud of the services we
provide to our children and families. We reflect often on the needs
of our children and their families and how best we can meet these
needs. Our families struggle to meet their daily needs. We are here
to provide them with stability for their children, a safe place
where the children can learn and grow to meet their potential for
success. The evidence is clear that services Rainbow provides are
in increasing demand. To demonstrate this need, a few years ago
80% of the children entering our preschool were in need of speech
development therapy (little to no language skills). Today, that
need is 95+%. We will be seeking additional funding this year to
try and meet this increased need. Why Rainbow? We like to believe
that we offer the extra care and attention to children that make
a difference. The descriptive article on our preschool's offerings
can give you a glimmer on how we accomplish excellence.
PROVIDER
PROFILE
Evelyn Padgett-Niles
Evelyn
has been working as a Family Child Care provider for Rainbow Child
Development Center since January 15,1979. Prior to becoming a licensed
provider Evelyn provided private child care services to families
in the Plumley Village area. She learned about Rainbow through one
of the mothers of a child that she was caring for. This mother was
having difficulty paying Evelyn for her son's childcare. Rainbow
was one of the few agencies that offered parents child care subsidies.
Evelyn learned that Rainbow was also assisting Plumley Village residents
to obtain their Family Child Care licenses. Once licensed, Evelyn
began to take placements through Rainbow. She was able to continue
to care for Shawn who was the child of the mother who had informed
her about Rainbow. Shawn is now twenty-five years old.
In 1979 the Family Child Care program consisted of five-homes. The
homes were all located in Plumley Village. The program now has thirteen
provider homes located through out the city.
Helping children and families continues to be as important today
as it was back in 1979. Knowing that she was part of an agency that
has assisted many young parents in becoming productive members of
our community is something Evelyn takes pride in. Evelyn's advice
to someone new to the field. "Somedays are harder than others,
but stick with it. The smiling faces of the children make it all
worth while."
