From
the Executive Director
This
past spring, as the agency worked to update its strategic plan,
it was clear from the perspectives of both board and staff members
that the Center's space needs clearly had to be addressed. Staff
members sharing office space that is barely large enough to accommodate
one person, little to no storage space or meeting space, classrooms
that require major renovations and inadequate infrastructures to
meet electrical and plumbing needs have been the major issues facing
the agency for some time. There has been no room for program or
classroom expansion.
At
the time we were about to begin our facilities study, Edward Street
Day Care announced it would cease providing direct care to children
and would be selling its building at 10 Edward Street. Upon touring
the building, the Center recognized this site would meet all of
the specifications identified in our strategic plan, the most important
being that it would allow Rainbow to remain in the Belmont Hill
neighborhood and would be close to Plumley Village, the location
of our roots and our history.
We
are saddened that the Worcester area has lost a quality childcare
facility that is steeped in such a rich history. However, we are
thrilled that this magnificent building will remain as a childcare
facility. It was built for that purpose. Rainbow will strive to
maintain this wonderful legacy and do honor to its rich past. In
the months ahead we will be busy preparing the building for our
move as well as for the expansion of our preschool program to people
in the Worcester community. We look forward to the day when we are
moved in, settled and can welcome everyone to visit this wonderful
facility that will become the new home of Rainbow Child Development
Center.

Verizon
Grant
Verizon Communications, Inc. has recently made a $7,500 "Keeping
Kids on Track" grant to Rainbow's school age program to support
our Destination Imagination project (formerly known as Odyssey of
the Mind). The program provides children with the opportunity to
research, explore, and create in a team setting. Teams of children
in the school age program will compete with their peers from schools
throughout Worcester County. Teams select a theme for their program
and are required to improvise their performances during the rigorous,
day long competitions. Performances are judged. Winners move on
to regional competitions. The programprovides social, emotional
and educational opportunities for the participants.
