Rainbows
Impact
Success stories are always important when measuring an agencys
accomplishments in terms of meeting client needs. For Rainbow, the
successful impact on the life of a child and the childs family
are the things that matter. For children enrolled in our preschool
program, language development is critical in preparing a child for
future success. Our Center is fortunate to have the ability to provide
speech development therapy to children in this age group. While
there has always been considerable need for speech therapy among
our client population, we continue to see that need grow. A child
may come from an unstable environment, appropriate stimulation may
be limited to non-existent or the child may come from a home where
English is not the first language spoken. Last year 88% of the children
enrolled in our preschool received speech development therapy. Statistics
measuring results are dramatically impressive. To demonstrate this
achievement, let me tell you about Louie:
Louie entered the preschool when he was 2 years, 9 months
old. He appeared confused, frightened and traumatized. He had little
motivation, direction or interest in exploring the environment.
He used single words and gestures to communicate. Louies initial
speech evaluation showed he had good receptive language but his
expressive skills were barely measurable. When he did use words,
there were a lot of articulation errors, which made his speech difficult
to understand. He would sigh heavily and clench both fists in his
frustration. Mostly, he would give up.
Louie
has been enrolled in speech therapy for four months now. His expressive
language has blossomed by 33% already. He loves school and all his
friends. He is now communicating in four and five word sentences.
He is very socially appropriate. He is developing his attention
span and his cognitive skills are continuously expanding. His self-esteem
is soaring. He now has a solid base for continued growth in all
areas.
Chances
are that if Louie had not been given the opportunity to enroll in
an early care and education program like Rainbow, and if he was
unable to access special services such as speech development therapy,
Louie would not be developmentally ready by the time he is old enough
to enter kindergarten. Children in that classification are often
labeled as special needs and their school career may be headed in
a negative direction. Louie, fortunately, now is on the right path
thanks to the services and care Rainbow can provide.
